'Hoosier Rising Stars': Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman presented a team of Destination Imagination students from Sunman-Dearborn Intermediate and Middle Schools with the Hoosier Rising Star Award at a special ceremony on May 10. Pictured with Lt. Gov. Skillman are Chloe McCracken, Chloe Rosenberger, Shelby Lutz, Jackie Ketcham, Alex Nishime, Zachary Cody and Trevor McClamroch. The students were honored for a community project at Greendale Cemetery. Burial records were lost after flooding and relocation, and the students worked with local officials to identify graves and map the historic cemetery. (Photo by Cindy Jasper-Parisey)
Primary election results: Just under 19 percent of Dearborn County's 36,000 registered voters went to the polls in the Tuesday, May 8 primary. Here are the winners for the Republican nomination for contested offices. There were no local Democrat primaries. County Council: 4 candidates for 3 at-large seats. Top vote-getter was Randy Lyness, followed by incumbent Bill Ullrich, Charles Keyes and incumbent Maynard Barrett. County Treasurer: Phil Weaver over incumbent Barbara Kaffenberger. Mr. Weaver, the current county clerk, was term-limited. County Coroner: Top vote-getter among four candidates was Steve Callahan, followed by Sue Dudgeon, Bill Steiner and Michael Waterman.
County Surveyor: Incumbent Dennis Kraus Jr. over Roger Woodfill. In the U.S. Senate primary, Dearborn County Republicans followed other statewide voters and chose Richard Mourdock over incumbent Sen. Richard Lugar. In the crowded 6th District Congressional race on the Republican side, nominee Luke Messer came in second to Travis Hankins in Dearborn. Democratic nominee Bradley Bookout was the third choice among Dearborn voters.

Full-day kindergarten planned: The Sunman-Dearborn School Board, in a 5-1 vote at a meeting May 3, approved a plan for full-day kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year, joining many other school districts in Indiana that offer the full-day program. Click here for details.
County hires jail project manager: Dearborn County Commissioners selected Maxwell Construction of Lawrenceburg as construction manager for the proposed jail expaansion project. Click here for coverage of the meeting.
EMS, fire meeting set: A meeting to discuss EMS and fire services in Dearborn County will be held Thursday, May 24 from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at the Commissioner’s meeting room at the County Administration building. Commissioners and county council members will be attending. Last year, commissioners authorized a review of current services and solicited information from the local fire and EMS organizations.

Part of N. Dearborn Road to close for a year beginning in June
A portion of North Dearborn Road will be closed from sometime in June until the summer of 2013 for a $3 million project that will straighten the road as a safety measure. The project will start just east of State Route 1 and proceed east of Hiltz Road. The intersection with Hiltz Road will be realigned to improve sight distance, and the bridge at Slab Camp Creek will be replaced with a new concrete culvert. The detour will be McCann Road to Gaynor Ridge Road to Old State Route 1 to State Route 1. Property owners along the project route and on Hiltz Road will have access during closure. Tree-cutting in the area has begun because of environmental regulations regarding the endangered Indiana bat. Cutting of trees 14 inches in diameter or larger within the project limits is required because the bat roosts in large trees during the summer. Check back for an update on the construction start date. (Photo: The bridge at Slab Camp Creek will be replaced.)
